Spring/Summer 2010

This update is long over due. I am sorry it took so long to write and post. Last season was a roller costar of emotions. After the season all I wanted to do was golf and take some time off and in doing that I forgot to blog. So my apologizes about that.

This past summer I had a lot of fun. I was able to participate in the big HBC golf tournament in Toronto. They are supporting me thru an athlete bursary. This tournament is so big it takes up 5 golf courses each with 36 teams….ITS MASSIVE!! I was in charge of the 50/50 hole at my course. I managed to get every single player/ group to buy at least one ticket per player and in the end the winner came from my course and walked away with about $6,000.00 !! It was great tournament and I got to see my relatives in Toronto too so it was even more fun!

My mom, sister and I flew to Toronto and met up with my Aunt Lori and Cousin Ally. We had a girl’s weekend in Fort Erie. My dad’s college roommate Larry Gibson, his wife (Wendy) and his whole family lives there and own operate the Fort Erie Golf Course. They were holding a girls only golf tournament and did we have fun!!!! It was a great weekend!

I played a lot of golf this summer. I really enjoy being out there and playing. No 2 shots are alike for me at least and each shot challenges you to be the best you can be. I played some golf tournaments this past summer and learned a lot. It really helped my strategy. Did I play well in them? Overall no. I had some good holes but I didn’t score that well. It did help me become a smarter player. I wanted to get into the golf tournaments because I felt that competitive golf would help the mental part of my skiing. That is recovering from bad shots, feeling pressure and all that goes along with being in a competitive environment. The skills required to be successful are transferable from sport to sport. It was a lot of fun because I played a lot of golf with my sister. In the end I played in the Club Champs at the Elks golf course where I shot a 78-84-78. 78’s are my personal best. I even could have gone lower but a few bad holes each game contributed to the higher scores but man was it fun!! If you win the club championship on a course in Calgary that is part of the RCGA you get to play in the citywide championship but I was gone at a ski camp so I wasn’t able to attend.

I am very fortunate that for the most part all of my sponsors have agreed to continue to sponsor and support me because without them I would be in big financial trouble. Here is what I found out about unemployment in Canada I don’t know if this gets taxed but by an means “For most people, the basic rate for calculating benefits is 55% of the weekly average insurable earnings. Effective January 1, 2010, the maximum yearly insurable earnings is $43,200. This means that you can receive a maximum amount of $457 per week.” http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/types/regular.shtml#calculate
This a lot more then many athlete is making. So without the support of companies like Crescent Point Energy, Pro-Ag, Demand Marketing and Ernst Hansch Construction I would have a lot more financial worries on my plate. So thank you guys for stepping up and supporting me.

That was my summer golf, training and working for my Uncle at the ballpark
(Calgary Vipers) It’s a great life I love what I do and I do it because I love it. See you all soon on the slopes!

Serria Nevada Spain

When ever I thought of Spain I would picture sunny warm weather not skiing. When we arrived it was warm and sunny with a light wind. It was so nice we drove down the coast. It was simply beautiful. As we drove closer to the mountains it was still nice. I just couldn’t see how or believe there was a mountain with snow on it but sure enough after about 2 hours of driving there it was a mountain with snow.

We had the next day off and it was nice and sunny. I walked around town, the resort is built on the hill and every street went up. It was like the roads and buildings were layered into the mountain. It was pretty cool.

Just our luck with our race day closing in the weather went south. The day of training we went up for inspection and the wind really picked up. The sand from the Sahara was blowing in from Africa and it was making the snow have a pink tint to it. That was neat to see.  The weather caused a delay.  We sat in the lodge hoping for a break in the weather so training could start. We sat for over3 hours but it didn’t happen. That night all the athletes of ski cross had a meeting to talk about where we wanted the sport to go and a few issues and concerns were discussed. It was great to see everyone cared about the sport and showed up to help make it better.

The race committee decided that since the weather was suppose to get worse that we would train and race all in the same day. We went up for training at 8:30 am and right off the bat we were delayed for course work.  As training went on the fog came in and the weather deteriorated.  Just before qualifying they told everyone to go inside.  We sat from 11am until 1:45 PM. We re-inspected, did qualifying and raced finishing at 5 pm. It was a long day!

The track was a bit weird. I qualified 6th and they were only taking the top 16. I felt good and ready to race. In my first heat I had Ash who qualified in 3rd and Anna from Sweden who was 11th.  Both are very strong starters so I gave what I had out of the gate and was in 3rd . Coming into the 2nd corner I was pretty close to Ash but she crashed and I had to land and miss her.  I did that but in doing so I lost all my speed and the Japanese racer in 4th passed me. I couldn’t catch up and my race day was ended. I ended the day in 11th .

It  wasn’t  how I wanted to end the season but I did end the season 7th overall in the world. We won the Nations Cup in Ski Cross (3rd year straight) and Overall Freestyle again.

It is exciting to know I am part of the best ski cross nation in the world and if I can be with these girls in training that I will get my win and more podiums.

Time to head home and the Nationals! And hopefully not long after that golf season!

Grindelwald, Meringen-Hasliberg-Switzerland

Switzerland was kind to me this time around.  The track in Grindelwald was fast. It was a lot like a super g track in a few spots. Our team was fast in qualifications. We went: 1st Ash, 2nd Kelsey, 4th Cline and I tied for 5th but started before the other girl so got ranked 6th.  On race day it was nice and sunny for warm ups. However, as we progressed into the heats the fog rolled in. My heat was 3rd to go. I messed up and didn’t qualify for quarters. I haven’t been that mad at myself in a very long time but I was down right angry at myself for my mistake. As the heats continued the thick fog made for some long holds and heading into the 8th heat the fog was so thick we couldn’t see the finish line. They held the race with intervals of 15 minutes for a over a two hour period.  Since they weren’t able to finish this round the decision was made to reschedule all heats for the next day. That was a blessing in disguise for me. I took a long hard look at myself that night and at what was going on with me. I figured a few things out and the next day went out first round like a bull in a china shop. It felt good so I kept with that all day.

The next thing I knew I was in semi finals with Ash. She got out in front me and one of the German girls got a bit tangled up but I came out in front and crossed the line in 2nd place thus heading into my first finals! I was very excited. But wait the German girl protested what had happened with us. She did not win her protest as she had no grounds for it so I was heading to finals with Ash, Kelsey, myself and Anna from Sweden. Anna is a 6’2 and is a solid girl who is a strong starter, as well as Ash and Kelsey. I knew I had my work cut out for myself.  I went hard out of the gate and figured out that I wasn’t going to make it to the first corner first. So I tucked in behind them and hoped someone would make a mistake so I could make a move on them. Sure enough Anna got pushed low and I was able to pass her and sit in 3rd to the finish!

I had my first podium! I was so excited for my podium. Best of all it was a sweep! I couldn’t believe it. It was unreal.  (1, 2, 3 Canadians on the podium) Awesome!

We didn’t have much time to enjoy our sweep because the next day was training and qualifying in Meringen. Our team is pretty good at figuring out a track quickly so we weren’t worried. But it wasn’t our day we were a bit off the pace. Ash in 6th, I was 9th, Kelsey 10th and Cline in 32nd. But we were all playing and that is what mattered.

I felt good and ready to race.  I had my game plan and I was ready to stick to it. I went thru first round finishing with the heat win and was meeting Ash in quarters. I was starting well but Ash is one of the best starters in the world so I tucked in behind her and was going to semi’s. My semi heat was like a final. The heat consisted of  the world’s  number one ranked racer Ophie, Number two Ash, Number 4  Anna from Sweden and myself.  I had my work cut out. I had a good start but the lane I was in was a tough one.  So once again I tucked in behind them and hoped for a mistake. Part way down Ash and Ophie got tangled and went down. I picked my line to get thru them. Ash slid right into my line and I had to jump around her and then around the gate.  I was off balance and fell as well. In the mean time Ophie got back up and passed us. Ash passed me as well as I was trying to hike up the jump.  As a result I was off to small finals.  I was sad but it was still a good day. Ash went out hard and fast in small finals I was right behind her I made a mistake and lost a lot of speed,  the German girl was able to pass me so I ended up 7th.  I learned a few new things and was really happy with my result.  It sure topped last year’s when I was choppered out with my shoulder injury.  One year later to the day I placed 7th. It was a great day. But it wasn’t so great I got sick but I am fortunate because I have a few days before finals start so hopefully I will be back to 100% health for those!

Spain here we come!!!

Branas, Sweden

First race post Olympics. (Qualification was only taking the top 16 girls)  It wasn’t the strongest qualifying for our girls team. Cline was 4th, I was 9th, Ash was 11th and Kelsey was 13th.  In first round I was with Cline and Kelsey. It didn’t fair well for me I made some mistakes and went out first round. I wasn’t all that happy with my result but it woke me back up. I finished 11th and it was a good wake up call.  I am ready for the last 3 races of the year. I have made some new goals for the last part of the season and I want to reach them! So watch out world.  Here I come and I’m coming full force!

In my mind its March and it should be warm, But that’s not the case in Europe it is still cold! Dress warm!

My Olympics

Life since the Olympics has been very busy. Since we are back on the road racing in Europe, I have time to share my Olympic Blog.

Before Stanley and I headed off to Vancouver were asked to speak at Cam Bailey’s children’s school about ski cross. They wanted to know how we felt about going to the Olympics and they wanted to know everything about the new Olympic sport, ski cross. It was a great opportunity to realize how I enjoy talking to young children. I will enjoy sharing my Olympic experience once the ski cross season is completed.

It was an amazing to see 400 students eagerly waiting to hear our presentation.  Goose bumps appeared when they began cheering!! The team also had a send off party for us. My dear friends and lovely Hampton family attended the celebration at zin.ca wine store. I loved seeing everyone but I have to say the cake was really good!  If you are ever in the Inglewood area stop by the wine store. (right beside the public pool)  It is a really beautiful place.

The next day Stanley and I flew to Vancouver.  When we got off the plane we went and got our accreditation right there in the airport. That was pretty cool. We then went down to get our baggage. My uncle was there with a sign with my name on it and some flowers! It was great to see him.  It had been a really long time since our last visit together. We had a quick visit and off to the village I went.

Walking thru security, then thru the village and the road leading to our housing made me feel like a kid in the candy store.  It was so exciting and fun. All the flags on our Canadian buildings and the big Aussie one as well set the atmosphere. It was so exciting. Later that day we got all our Olympic clothing. My favorite piece was the sweat pants. They are amazing.  A real close 2nd is the closing ceremony sweater.  It was handmade here in Canada and is really nice. We had a little pep rally to welcome all the Canadians to the village and Sandra O from Grays was there.  It was unreal.

Next day was opening day. My parents drove all the way from Calgary to come to Opening. I was so excited and happy they were able to come and proud because I would not have been walking in that stadium without their financial, emotional and loving support.  This was a moment for my whole family including my sister who was at school. They arrived in town early and were able to come to the McDonalds near the village to visit with me. They brought me the letters, cards and Downhill Racer Winner aka DW teddy bear from my little cousins in Winnipeg. It had skis, poles and a Canadian flag on its foot and fur. I was able to take a few pictures of DW  around the village. Thanks for the support.

We had another pep rally before we headed off to join the other teams in GM Place and then off to BC place for opening. It was a long day but totally worthwhile. I think we waited over 2 hours in our opening gear sweating before we walked in to the unspeakable roar that I will never forget when “Team Canada” was introduced. We saw one of our teammates Brian as we were starting to walk in. Seeing Brian was awesome. It was overwhelming and amazing to see all these people watching us walk in. I made it on TV.  It was exciting because I had emails and texts before I had even got to my seat
saying,” we saw you!” The opening show was amazing to watch.  I am such a fan of all the performers who welcomed us to the world and to our home country Canada.

After the show we went and ate some food. It took a bit of time to wind down. The realization hit home that I am in the Olympics, I am part of Team Canada and we are in Canada. The following day we took off to our Top Secret training location in Hemlock. It is a great hill. It has the small ski hill feeling and not a big resort feeling so it helped keep the team grounded. It rained alot but the training we got there was great. It made us all feel a bit more comfortable about what we were about to do over the next week. There was no TV in the house where we were staying at so we weren’t able to watch too much of the games unless we were in the day lodge. I am a huge sports fan and love to watch everything…well almost everything but I do appreciate the work and skill of the other athletes and what it took them to get to the games.

Once we got back to the village it was time for us to get ready for our event.  Our first day of training was with the boy’s team. It was great. The track was awesome and a lot of fun. Brian was kind enough to run the track before while they were building it to make sure it was in great shape and amazing for our sport to shine. His help will always be remembered and appreciated by us. On this day our teammate Dave Duncan crashed on the start feature and broke his collarbone. He was no longer able to race. Brady Leman was the alternate and was called on to fill that spot. Its weird to have more then one day of training and we the girls had more days to come. The next day the guys trained in the morning and Brady crashed. He hurt his bad leg and as a result was pulled from the race.  Davey Barr now the 3rd alternate was in and it was race day. At the end of the race with very few practice runs to get ready he finished 6th.

I choose not to go up and watch the men’s race. Instead I meet up with my parents and Chance and we hit up the HBC lounge and watched the men race on TV. I find it much easier to race then watch our guy’s race live. It was stressful watching. It turned out to be a good day. Not great as we weren’t on the podium but we ended up with Del in 4th (with a sick crash), Davey 6th, Stanley 10th.  Now it was time to fully focus on my race.

We had another day of training and I felt good.  I had been nailing what I wanted to nail and was feeling comfortable and confident on the track. On race day, I did my training run and when I got to the bottom I saw my family, extended family and friends who came out to watch me. I went back to the start to focus and I was ready. I felt good strong and I knew what I wanted to do. I nailed the start. I skied well just a little open in qualifying and finished 10th. Not to bad.  I was ready for the heats. After some food and a break we headed back out for the heats. I was pumped. A bit nervous but I had my game plan and I was ready. I felt confident and ready to race.

In my heat  when the gate dropped I pulled out hard  and I missed a bit of the fin which killed my speed over the second feature and I had issues.  I found myself in 4th a place I didn’t expect that but I knew I could pass later down the course. I heard Stanley’s voice in my head saying to be patient and I was. I knew where I wanted to pass and I was lining it up.  Then one of the girls in front of me all of a sudden went from one side of me to the other near the take off of the big jump. It was tossed but knew I had time still. As I was getting ready to make my move the girl in 2nd crashed and the girl in 3rd was falling.  I tried to pick my lane to avoid them and get thru but I went off the feature and crashed as well. I got up as quick as I could and finished with no poles. I finished the heat in 3rd and went out in first round. My worst result of the whole year. I was devastated. I had let my family and myself down. But they were just so proud of me for getting up and finishing and being there that it made me realize what I had over come to get to this race. That moment it wasn’t the result I wanted but the approach and experience of the Olympics. The fact I had nailed that start every run except one was saying something. I was sad for how I did but excited for Ash because she won. That’s right a Canadian won GOLD and it was amazing to watch.

That night we went to medal ceremony and headed to the after party. I was able to see my family. My mom, dad, sister, Chance, Aunty Anne, Aunty Shirley, Aunty Lori, Uncle Jim, Uncle Ron, Ashley, Katie, Suez, Peter, Caitlin and Wendy (who came down from Whistler village where she is working with as an athletic therapist). I think that is everyone. I felt so supported and loved it was great. We had a great time it was amazing to see and catch up with everyone.

The next day my parents drove back to Calgary and many of the others flew home. I spend the day with Chance and we went and watched the quarter final hockey game. USA vs Swiss. It was a great game. The Swiss made the USA work for there win. It was a lot of fun! That night we had a ski team thank you party and watched the Canada Russia game, the bobsled girls- gold and silver runs. It was a great day, with great company and great results for Canada.

Chance was flying out on the afternoon of the 25th so I met him in the morning. We got to the airport early so we just sat there and watched the semi for the woman’s curling! Also on our Bell phones we had the bronze medal woman’s hockey game on. It was fun to watch. After Chance left I headed off to watch the men’s curling semi where I watched them win!!! After the game I was able to meet up with my Aunty Shirley, Aunty Ann, and Uncle Ron for dinner and catch up about life. It was a special time and such a nice visit.

The next three days I watched woman’s gold medal curling, men’s gold medal curling, and most exciting I got a ticket to the men’s gold medal hockey game! All three of these games were amazing and so spectacular to watch!

It was time for the closing ceremonies and soon time to get back to normal world cup ski cross races.  Closing was exciting but sad because it was all over.  Now I have 4 years to become a better and stronger competitor. I look forward to doing this and seeing where I can take myself in this sport. Who would like to join me in Russia in 2014?

I want to thank all those who cheered for me thru their TV’s and that were there. Thank you for all the support and PLEASE don’t hide for the next 4 years keep watching and cheering!

Mid Season Update

Here is a quick mid season update. And yes the blogs from the races before will be posted for my editor has been gone away on real business and had no internet.

But here is where we stand on January 25, 2010.
I am in Montreal where we had a press conference today where they announced the 2010 Olympic Team for Vancouver. A total of 18 athletes will represent Canada in Free Style. 10 men made it and 8 woman. And that is right I did it!!!

I’M GOING TO THE OLYMPICS!!!

It is unreal and I can’t believe it. I am in shock and still can’t fully believe it. I had many goals this season and the Olympics was one of them along with every other Canadian athlete.

Besides going to the Olympics I have also been invited to X Games where I am heading tomorrow in Aspen and am sitting 8th in the World Cup FIS points.

So far this has been an amazing season and I can’t wait to see where the next month takes me and the last half the season!

Keep an eye on the site and I will tell you all about X Games and the Olympics!!!
